Women's Gold Medal Match

Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA (ITA) vs. Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO (ITA)

16:00 CEST | 18 May 2019

It will be a historic all-Italian Super Final in Berlin on May 18 when Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA and Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO vie for their first title in Europe’s elite competition when this year’s CEV Champions League reaches its climax at Max-Schmeling-Halle. In the semis, NOVARA ended the reign of VakifBank ISTANBUL with a truly dramatic come-from-behind Golden Set victory while Imoco Volley did not drop a single set in their two matches with Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL to secure their third consecutive #CLVolleyW medal in three years.

  • It is the first time since 2005 that the gold medal match of the CEV Champions League - Women features two teams from the same country. Previously, up until 2017, the regulations in force prevented this from happening.

  • Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA had to endure their first setback in the competition this year when losing 1-3 to title-holders VakifBank ISTANBUL in front of a full house. However, with Paola Egonu scoring 39 points, they came from behind in the Golden Set, cancelling two ‘Berlin points’ for VakifBank and scoring four in a row of their own to secure a 16-14 win.

  • Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA will contest their first #CLVolleyW title match. Their team captain Francesca Piccinini, now 40, however, has as many as five titles from Europe’s elite competition to her name.

  • On Tuesday, Imoco Volley has become the first team to book their ticket to Berlin. They did so with a second 3-0 victory in as many matches with Fenerbahce Opet ISTANBUL.

  • Imoco Volley will try to complete their set of #CLVolleyW medals as they already have a silver from 2017 and bronze from the 2018 edition in their showcase.

  • The eventual winners of the Super Final in Berlin will cash € 400,000 – with the runners-up travelling home with € 200,000 – a record purse in European Volleyball history.

  • The Super Final will extend the domestic rivalry between Igor Gorgonzola NOVARA and Imoco Volley CONEGLIANO and take it to the international stage. These two teams locked horns in the 2017 and 2018 Italian Supercup, 2018 and 2019 national cup as well as in the championship series of last year’s national league.
